Social Security

The beginning of social security appeared in Germany in the latter part of the nineteenth-century. In Iceland, one may trace the origins of social security back to the year 1889. At that time, a law was passed concerning a relief fund for old aged and sickly common people. Just after the turn of the century (1900), a law was passed concerning accident insurance for sea men and little later a law on the old age pension came into being. The first national health system for all was established in 1909.
Now the Government’s Social Security Department (“Tryggingastofnun ríkisins”), set up in 1936, supervises the nation’s social security system.
