About the Institute

The Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies is an academic research institute on university level, operating on an independent budget and answering directly to the Ministry of Education. Its role is to:

  • Conduct research on Icelandic Studies and related scholarly topics, especially in the field of Icelandic language and literature.
  • Disseminate knowledge in these fields.
  • Preserve and augment the collections within its care.

The director of the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies is Dr. Guðrún Nordal. 

Guðrún was appointed director of the Institute on 1 March 2009. She was previously Professor in Medieval Icelandic Literature, Faculty of Humanities, University of Iceland.
