The Place Name Institute of Iceland

The Place Name Institute of the National Museum of Iceland was founded in 1969 but in 1998 it’s name was changed into the Place Name Institute of Iceland. Before that time place name material was gathered by individuals with support and motivation from the Icelandic Archaeological Society. A place name archive was thus formed and was housed at the National Museum of Iceland. On September 1st 2006 the Place Name Institute of Iceland was merged as a department into a larger institute, The Árni Magnsússons Institute for Icelandic Studies.
